Isla Holbox How to Get to There!

Isla Holbox-Chiquilá Q. Roo Mexico Driving Instructions

Coming from Cancun by car you would take Hwy# 180 (*free road not the toll road) east to the town of El Ideal, passing through many small Mayan pueblos or villages on the way. At El Ideal you will signs to Isla Holbox and Kantunilkin, take this road north. Will be a right turn. At one point there will be a fork in the road with left turn to Tizimin and right to Chiquilá. You want to take the road to Chiquilá driving through the town of Kantunilkin and the village of Solferino. Trip is approx. 3 hours . There are parking lots in Chiquilá. Here in Chiquilá the ferry departs for Holbox island.

Traffic Circle Chiquilá

Coming from Merida by car you would take Hwy# 180 east towards Cancun, passing Valladolid, continue until El Ideal. Here turn left going to the north to Chiquilá.Park your car and then take the ferry over to Isla Holbox.

Coming from Playa del Carmen and points south by car the easiest is to take Hwy #307 south to the town of Tulum. Here you will find signs for Coba. Take this road, on your way passing three different Mayan pueblos along the way. Be cautious with "TOPE" signs, as these are speed bumps. You will reach a traffic circle just prior to the Coba ruins entrance. The circle will have signs to Nuevo Xcan ( first right, sharp angle), another to Chemax,third exit to Merida via Sam Pedro(on Hwy # 295) and lastly on the far extreme side of the circle the turn off for the ruins to COBA. You will see a sign to Nuevo Xcan and you will take this road. It will be the farthest right of the traffic circle. Do not go to Chemax or to Merida. From the Coba circle to Nuevo Xcan you will be on a less trafficked road with three Mayan pueblos, the second of which will have an exit to head to the Punta Laguna where there are spider monkeys. At Nuevo Xcan,make a right and now you will be on Hwy # 180. Stay on this to El Ideal and then follow the above directions to Chiquilá. Upon arrival in Chiquilá off to the right side you will find private lots to park your car. Once your car is safely parked, head to the ferry pier and cross over to Holbox Island.

Bus Information Traveling to Chiquilá

Coming from Cancun by bus (main bus terminal in downtown Cancun city) there are departures daily at 7:30am, and 11:30 am that will take you to Chiquilá.

Coming from Merida by bus you can take bus leaving at 11PM from the main terminal in Merida arriving about 6am in Chiquilá.

Chiquilá to Isla Holbox 9 Hermanos Ferry service price per person is 40 pesos 6am,8am,10am,12n,2pm,4pm,5pm, and last crossing 7pm.

Isla Holbox to Chiquilá 9 Hermanos Ferry service price per person is 40 pesos 5am,7am,9am,11am,1pm,3pm,4pm,and last crossing 6pm.

Crossing time is approximately 25-30 minutes.

Upon arrival on this small sand bar island, you will notice that the principle means of transportation is the golf cart. Golf cart taxis will take you about for a modest fee or rent a cart to get around yourselves.

Once at the Isla Holbox rental house, Amigo's House Isla Holbox you will be given the keys and shown the house which is located on Ave Jeronomo de Aguilar (formerly Mariano Escobedo) between Calles Vulkey (previously Andres Q. Roo) and Calle San Pedro ( once known as Leona Vicaria) as is indicated in the map below.
